An intra-epidermal laser peel that precisely ablates the outermost layers of the skin. The procedure is individually tailored to the nature of the condition to be corrected. Wrinkles, scars, acne scars, keratoses or pigmentary problems have been very successfully treated with a MicroLaser Peel.
Generally microdermabrasion only removes the stratum corneum (10 microns).
The MicroLaser Peel is a partial-to-full epidermal peel (20-50 microns) and is performed with topical anesthetic. Because this procedure ablates deeper into the epidermis, it is the perfect step between microdermabrasion and full skin resurfacing.
You will experience smoother, healthier, tighter and more vibrant skin. To achieve ideal results the level I peel (only requiring 3 – 4 days downtime) should be repeated at least twice, spaced 6 – 8 weeks apart. The procedure can be performed on a Thursday or Friday so you can return to work the following monday. Symptoms immediately following the procedure resemble a sunburn, with minor sloughing on the second day. Redness will begin to fade by the third day and be easily covered by make-up on the 4th day. Dr. Bakala will assess your skin type before commencing your first microlaser peel to recommend what is right for you.
These conditions that can make the skin look blotchy and uneven can be successfully treated by laser. Laser pulses are absorbed in the unwanted vessels, heating and destroying them. Spot treatment may take only a few minutes, longer for full face redness. Although there is no virtual down-time, pink or red coloration is temporary after treatment and can be camouflaged with make-up until it resolves. Treatment of spider veins can sometimes require more than one treatment and facial flushing will require a series of approximately three treatments spaced 4 – 6 weeks apart.
Botox is an injectable derived from a purified protein, smoothing out frown lines by preventing the muscles from contracting into a wrinkle. It blocks the nerve impulse from reaching the treated area and as a result the muscle relaxes, creating smooth contouring with expression. It is particularly useful in treating forehead lines and preventing the muscles between the eyebrows from contracting into a wrinkle.
Botox has been used safely and effectively for many years. The amounts used for wrinkle therapy start at a recommended 30 cc dosage and should only be administered by a trained practitioner, knowledgable of the precise injection sites of the muscles being treated. Dr. Bakala has lots of experience treating patients with Botox and has written a medical journal article on the subject.
Dermal fillers are an ideal form of treatment to correct fine lines, deeper creases (i.e. the lines that run vertically from the inner cheeks to the corners of the mouth). Thinning lips can be enhanced or plumped up according to individual needs. Dermal fillers are instantaneous in their result and can be done in a lunch hour. Restylane and Juvederm are made up of hyaluronic acid, a natural compound found in the human body that helps to keep the skin plump and elastic. With age the amount of hyaluronic acid decreases, resulting in increased lines. Injection of hyaluronic acid creates volume, augmenting the problematic areas for a period of several months.
Other products, such as Bellafill injectables offer more permanent corrections and Dr.Bakala can advise you if you would be a suitable candidate for either of these treatments. Our web-link site offers more information on these products.
IPL photo re-juvenation will help treat the brown age and sun damage spots as well as red veins. Once these are treated the daily use of products containing sunscreen are the best prevention. We believe that our physician-structured products are superior in revitalizing and treating specific problems. We have products containing ingredients that combat aging and pigmentation, which can be combined with chemical peel treatments. For a more aggressive treatment our Blu-U light with Levulan or a series of microlaser peels can help fade discolourations. These are some of the options available at Dr. Bakala’s facility.
Blu-U blue light treatments can kill the bacteria that produces outbreaks of acne. Sitting in front of the light for 15 minute sessions once or twice weekly are recommended. The number of treatments are regulated by Dr. Bakala. Blu-U treatment combined with the action of Levulan (a naturally occuring photosensitizing compound, approved by FDA and Health & Welfare Canada for treatment reduce acne significantly, improving texture and minimizing pore size)speed up the process, and requires 2 – 3 treatments spaced 3 weeks apart for maximal benefit.
We offer PCA (Physician’s Choice of Arizona)peel treatments which work well to control mild acne, asphyxiated skin (dry on the surface, oily underneath)and those with mild sun damage, incorporating user friendly ingredients, such as lactic acid, fruit acids,(AHAs)and L-ascorbic acid for strengthening and brightening. An oxygenation procedure can be added to stimulate respiration and circulation within the skin. There are treatments for all skin types and can be performed once monthly for maximal benefit.
For deep, multiple, wrinkles the Erbium Laser resurfacing targeted specifically to these areas can remove unwanted wrinkles. You will need 2 weeks down time because of redness, however, we do offer complimentary camouflage make-up to mask the redness after 10 days. The long term benefits of this procedure are definitely worth it with long lasting results. Dr. Bakala has had a lot of experience with laser and he has the expertize to customize each individual treatment. Other wrinkles may be able to be filled with derma fillers or softened by Selphyl treatments.
Yes, for those who have enjoyed a lot of sun in the past but are noticing the signs of actinic keratoses (sun damage spots)an application of Levulan is applied with the direction from Dr. Bakala. Following this you position are to be treated in front of the Blu-U light for the specified amount of time to activate the Levulan to target these skin problems.
Our Sciton laser has a `cool plate’ attachment that keeps the treated body area very comfortable during treatment. Laser hair removal does not require downtime, other than keeping the area cool immediately after treatment. 3 – 6 treatments, spaced 6 – 8 weeks apart, depending on hair and skin type are usually required as the hair grows in 6 week cycles. Call our office for specific concerns.
This laser light technology works to lighten dark spots on the skin, thus decreasing unwanted pigmentation and freckles (hyperpigmentation). It works well to reduce or eliminate redness and broken capillaries, making this an ideal treatment for the FACE, CHEST, NECK, UPPER BACK, FOREARMS AND HANDS. The treatments require no down time, in fact you can go back to work immediately.
The broad band light technology provides light pulses to the skin. The colours in the light are attracted to the browns, reds and deeper collagen tissue. The heat generated from the light targets and vaporizes the browns, coagulates the reds and heats the collagen. The body’s healing mechanisms take over and slough the browns, absorbs the reds and thickens the collagen.
Established in 1987, the Non-Hospital Medical and Surgical Facilities Program (NHMSFP) has the mandate to establish, monitor and ensure standards of practice in private medical and surgical services in BC. Presently, 64 accredited facilities provide a range of services from minor to more complex surgical procedures as approved by the NHMSFP Committee of the College. The mandate and authority of the NHMSF Program is derived from the Health Professions Act and the Bylaws made under the Act.
Non-hospital medical/surgical facilities fall into one of three categories:
Class 1
Provides general anesthesia and major regional anesthesia (epidural, spinal nerve blocks) and may include use of IV sedation and/or analgesia, or local anesthesia only.
Class 2
Provides use of IV sedation and/or analgesia where the patient remains responsive and breathes without assistance.
Class 3
Provides local anesthesia only. May provide oral sedation but not IV sedation/analgesia or inhalants.
Direct oversight of the NHMSF Program is provided by a committee of specialists who are responsible to and report to the Board of the College.
While many physicians can perform non-surgical or minor surgical cosmetic procedures such as Botox® injections, some laser treatments, or the removal of minor lesions, in British Columbia only a qualified specialist such as a Plastic Surgeon, a Dermatologist with surgical training, or an Ear Nose and Throat Surgeon can perform more major, invasive cosmetic procedures.
Qualified surgical specialists have completed a minimum of five years of study and training in surgery after receiving a medical degree, and successfully passed comprehensive exams to demonstrate their knowledge. Through certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, they specifically qualify to perform surgeries. Physicians who hold certification with the Royal College in a surgical field use the initials FRCSC (Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Canada) after their name and can therefore refer to themselves as surgeons. Dermatologists use the initials FRCPC (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada) after their name as they are deemed by the Royal College to be physicians not surgeons, and therefore may not refer to themselves as “surgeon.”
Your surgeon’s certification by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery means that:
The ABFPRS Credential signifies that your surgeon:
Dr. C. Bakala MD FRCSC is Board Certified in, Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery in Canada and the USA.
He is also Board Certified, by the American Board of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
Board certification is just the beginning. A patient choosing a surgeon for facial plastic surgery must take the responsibility for asking questions and choosing the right surgeon. Make sure the surgeon you choose is one you can relate to and who answers your questions. Also, not every surgeon performs every facial plastic surgery procedure. Some focus on specific procedures. Make sure your surgeon is experienced in the procedure you want and regularly performs that procedure. NO medical or surgical certification board, including ABFPRS, guarantees competency or results.
You can be guaranteed that Dr. C Bakala has met the rigorous medical board standards of practice in the specialties he practices.
To verify your surgeon’s ABFPRS certification, contact the Board office.
