Lip Lift in Kelowna: A Surgical Approach to Upper Lip Proportion and Corner down turn.
A well-proportioned upper lip can play an important role in overall facial harmony. As we age, the area between the nose and upper lip may lengthen, causing the upper lip to appear thinner and less defined. A lip lift can help restore balance by creating greater upper lip show and up turn the lip corners creating a more youthful, refreshed appearance.

What Is a Lip Lift?
A lip lift is a surgical procedure that enhances the appearance of the upper lip by shortening the distance between the nose and lip. This creates a more defined lip shape, increases the visibility of the upper lip, and can help achieve a more youthful, balanced appearance. Unlike lip fillers, a lip lift provides a permanent improvement by repositioning the lip rather than adding volume.
A lip lift involves removing a small section of skin beneath the nose and carefully repositioning the upper lip to increase the amount of visible lip at rest. Unlike dermal fillers, the procedure does not add injectable volume but instead creates a structural change that can be maintained after healing. Dr. C. Bakala can discuss whether a surgical lip lift is appropriate for your goals and help you explore the available options during a consultation.
Types of Lip Lifts
Several lip lift techniques are available, and the appropriate approach depends on the patient’s anatomy and desired result. The bullhorn, or subnasal, lip lift removes a curved section of skin beneath the nostrils. Other techniques may involve an incision at or near the vermilion border or adjustments designed to address specific areas of the upper lip. Dr. C. Bakala also performs corner lip lift to correct the lip turning down at the corners.
Who Is a Suitable Candidate for a Lip Lift?
Candidates are generally adults with sufficient skin beneath the nose who want a change in upper-lip proportions. A lip lift may be considered when the upper lip appears less visible at rest or when the distance between the nose and upper lip is relatively long.
Lip Lift vs. Lip Fillers
Lip fillers use injectable material to add volume and modify lip shape. A lip lift removes skin and changes the position of the upper lip. The two treatments address different concerns and may be considered separately depending on individual needs.
The Lip Lift Procedure
The procedure is typically performed under local anesthesia and usually takes less than an hour. A carefully placed incision is made beneath the base of the nose, where a small amount of skin is removed. The upper lip is then gently elevated and the incision is meticulously closed to help minimize visible scarring.
Some swelling and bruising are expected during the first few weeks of healing. Most patients can return to many normal daily activities within a few days. Unlike lip fillers, a lip lift provides a permanent improvement in upper lip position and definition.
