Brighten Up Tired Eyes: Eyelid Lift Blepharoplasty

Woman with beautiful hazel eyes

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, improves the appearance of the area around the eyes. It addresses common eyelid concerns caused by aging, including fatty deposits, heavy eyebags, droopy skin, and lines and wrinkles. This procedure reduces bagginess from the lower eyelids and removes excess skin from the upper eyelids. Here are a few things to know about blepharoplasty.

Upper Eyelid Surgery

An upper eyelid surgery addresses droopiness, and puffiness, which can make one look aged, exhausted, and even sad. In this procedure, the surgeon will make strategic incisions within the natural crease of your eyelids. Once healed, the incisions will be less visible. Skin will be either removed or repositioned, and fat will be repositioned to give you the most natural-looking results, improving the appearance and functionality of the upper lids. An upper blepharoplasty typically takes about one to two hours. The recovery time is about one to two weeks. Once healed, you will experience a more rested and youthful appearance.

Lower Eyelid Surgery

As we age, the muscle elasticity under our eyes reduces, leading to baggy lower eyelids. Shadows may also appear under our eyes, leading to an aged appearance. Lower eyelid surgery is effective in combating all these issues. In lower eyelid surgery, the surgeon makes the incision in an inconspicuous site along the lash line and smile creases of the lower lid. Excess fat, muscle and skin are then trimmed away before the incision is closed with fine sutures. Eyelid puffiness caused primarily by excess fat may be corrected by a transconjunctival blepharoplasty. The incision in this case is made inside the lower eyelid, and excess fatty material is removed. When sutures are used to close this kind of incision, they are invisible to the eye. The sutures commonly are self-dissolving and leave no visible scar. A lower blepharoplasty usually takes one to two hours. The recovery time is about ten days to two weeks.

Eyelid Lift for Droopy Eyes

An eyelid lift or ptosis surgery treats droopy eyelids. Objectives for this procedure may include the restoration of proper eyelid positioning, improved vision, and appearance. In this procedure, the surgeon usually makes an opening on natural crease of the upper eyelid or inside the eyelid. This allows the surgeon to tighten or reattach the muscle that raises the eyelid. In some cases, a small graft may be used to connect the eyelid to the forehead muscle to help lift it. If both eyes are being treated, surgery typically takes one to two hours. Expected recovery time is a few weeks.

Benefits of Blepharoplasty

There are both functional and aesthetic benefits to eyelid surgery.

  • Youthful appearance: As we age, our eyelids can become droopy and saggy due to a lack of collagen. Blepharoplasty is an effective way to remove these droopy and saggy eyelids and restore a younger appearance.
  • Improved Vision and comfort: This not only provides long-lasting results and a natural appearance, but you may also experience improved vision if there has been vision impairment from droopy skin.
  • Minimal scarring: Blepharoplasty is a minimally invasive method. Scars are almost invisible after the initial healing stage. Today, you can also opt for laser blepharoplasty, which makes it easier to get rid of sagging eyelids with minimal to no scarring.
