What is Botox and How Long Does it Last?

Wrinkles aren’t a rare occurrence – everyone gets them. There are different habits and external factors that can cause wrinkles, but the solution is often the same. Botox is a popular and safe treatment for wrinkles and other signs of aging.

So, what is Botox, and how does it work to reduce wrinkles? Read on to learn all about Botox as an anti-aging facial treatment.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a drug made from Botulinum toxin. This toxin is produced by a microbe, Clostridium botulinum, which causes a type of food poisoning. C. botulinum bacteria are often present in natural settings, such as lakes, soil, and forests. They are harmless until their cell population exceeds a certain point; at this point, the bacteria start producing the toxin.

But don’t worry. Botox is only toxic when administered in very high concentrations. Cosmetic surgeons use very small doses of Botox to achieve the anti-aging effects. When administered carefully and with thorough training and experience, Botox has very few side effects and is considered a safe treatment.

How Does Botox Work?

Botox is a neurotoxin that has a temporary paralytic effect on your muscles. It does this by interacting with your nervous system to disrupt the nerve signalling process that initiates muscle contraction. When your muscles can’t contract, they relax and soften. This reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

For use in cosmetic procedures, Botox is diluted with saline solution and injected directly into neuromuscular tissue.

What Is A Botox Procedure Like?

Your cosmetic surgeon will discuss a botox treatment plan with you. You’ll talk about your issues and your ideal result.

Botox injections only take a few minutes to administer. An appointment will usually take half an hour. You may feel slight discomfort when injected, but you won’t need painkillers or anesthesia. Two weeks before your procedure, you should stop taking any anti-inflammatory medication.

You’ll see the full effects of the injections in one or two weeks following the procedure.

How Long Does Botox Last?

Typically, the effects of Botox injections last between three and 12 months. This depends on the type of treatment, the amount of Botox used, and the way your body processes different substances.
As the Botox wears off, your muscles regain movement and your wrinkles gradually return. You may notice that the severity of your wrinkles lessens over time. As a result, more people are turning to Botox as a preventative measure to hold off signs of aging.
